This review is from Rick Spencer and Christal Smith. I cannot say enough good things about Eric Smith of Gateway Mortgage. What an awesome individual! I do not say that about too many people and you would not think that one would use it to describe a mortgage lender that you had just met, but it does. I am in my late adulthood and was a first-time home buyer. I was as knowledgeable about buying a home as the average person graduating from high school. After reading about buying a house, I contacted my bank and 2 or 3 other lenders. They quoted me mortgage rates which I assumed were good, after all, one of the quotes was from my bank of 30+ years. I had several contacts with these lenders over the course of 3 to 4 weeks, and the rates never came down. I was repeatedly assured that these were competitive rates. Then, I heard about Eric. I called him, and his first quote to me, without asking a single question and without knowledge of my other quotes, was 1 to 1.5% lower than the previous lenders! This was only the beginning of my entire experience with Eric. Eric provided answers to questions about the finances of home buying that I had not been able to obtain from other professionals over many years. Other professionals did not seem to understand my elementary questions, but Eric understood exactly what I was asking and answered them with superb clarity. He dissected the process of amortization. He directed me to websites where I could calculate mortgage payments at various interest rates, down payments, and terms. I flooded Eric with hundreds of text messages and phone calls over the 2 months of deciding about the home purchase. Every time, he was as pleasant and patient as he was during my first conversation with him. He had the patience of Job and I told him so. When I had some concerns about the house after the inspection and I announced that I probably would not go through with the purchase, he was very supportive, not pushy. He assured me that there would always be other homes that might suit my family and me even better. My family and I eventually purchased the home, and I can say, without reservation, I could not have done it without Eric.
