Loan Apps: Which Type Gets You the Money You Need

Updated 2026-10-25 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

Loan apps come in two kinds. Cash advance apps such as EarnIn, Dave and MoneyLion advance small amounts, often under $100 to start, repaid from your next deposit. Installment lending apps and online lenders offer larger loans repaid over months, usually with an APR and credit reporting. For $100 to $5,000, one 3-minute form reaches multiple lenders.

  1. 1 Choose an amount and fill out the form
  2. 2 Get matched with a lender in our network
  3. 3 Review your offer and get funded, often next business day

Tip: apply on a weekday morning for the best chance of funding by the next business day.

No hard credit inquiry on our end; lenders may check your credit. Not a lender; approval, amount and terms come from the lender. Example: $1,000 over 12 months at 35.99% APR ≈ $100.46/month.

Two kinds of lending apps

Search “loan apps” and you'll see two very different products mixed together:

  • Cash advance apps (also called earned-wage or paycheck advance apps) look at your bank deposits and front you a small amount before payday. You repay automatically when your next paycheck lands. They usually charge subscriptions, instant-transfer fees or optional tips rather than interest.
  • Installment lending apps are lenders with a mobile application. You borrow a set amount and repay it in fixed payments over several months. The cost is disclosed as an APR, and many report your payments to credit bureaus.

Which one is the right app to lend money depends mostly on how much you need and how long you need to pay it back.

Installment lending apps

Installment lenders with apps, such as Possible Finance (loans up to $500, repaid in installments, per its official site), suit people who want more than one paycheck to repay. Most online installment lenders also let you apply, sign and manage payments from a phone, even without a dedicated app.

Here's how installment payments can look. These use assumed rates, not quotes:

Which should you use?

  • You need under $100 and get paid soon: an advance app you already qualify for can cover it.
  • You need $300 or more: most app users won't have that limit yet. A lender loan is built for this.
  • You need several months to repay: an installment loan spreads the cost into fixed payments.
  • You want to build credit: pick a lender that reports payments to the bureaus.
  • You don't want to sign up for app after app: one form through our network reaches multiple lenders at once.

See if you qualify — it takes about 3 minutes. Start your free request. There is no obligation to accept an offer.

Using Zebra Finance from your phone

You don't need to download anything. Our form works in any mobile browser and takes about 3 minutes. We share your request with lenders in our network that serve your state, with requests from $100 to $5,000. Many lenders focus on income and may use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull. If approved, you'll see the amount, fees, APR and total to repay before you e-sign, and funds are often deposited by the next business day.

We are a matching service, not a lender, and approval isn't guaranteed. Rules vary by state; check yours on the state law lookup.

Tips for choosing any lending app

  • Read the fee screen. Instant-transfer and subscription fees add up; the app shows them before you accept.
  • Cancel unused subscriptions inside the app; deleting the app doesn't always cancel them.
  • Never pay an upfront fee to “unlock” a loan. Legitimate lenders take their fees from the loan or the repayment. See payday loan scams.
  • Check which bank accounts work; some apps don't support every bank. Chime users can see loans for Chime users.

Frequently asked questions

What app will let me borrow money instantly?

Cash advance apps such as EarnIn, Dave, MoneyLion and Chime MyPay offer instant delivery for a fee, with free standard delivery that takes longer. First advances are usually small. For larger amounts, lenders in our network offer $100 to $5,000, often funded by the next business day.

What is the best loan app for bad credit?

Cash advance apps generally don't check credit and look at bank deposits instead. Installment lenders may run a soft pull or use alternative credit data. If your need is above a few hundred dollars, compare lender offers, which show the APR and total cost before you sign.

Which loan apps give you $500?

Several cash advance apps advertise $500 or more, but most users start well below that and some say few members qualify for the top amount. Installment lenders more commonly approve $500 and up. Our form lets multiple lenders review a $500 request at once.

Do loan apps check your credit?

Most cash advance apps say they don't run a credit check for advances. Installment lending apps vary: some use a soft pull to show offers and a hard pull when you accept. Each app or lender explains its process before you apply.

Are lending apps safe?

Reputable apps and lenders disclose fees and terms up front and never ask you to pay to unlock a loan. Read the terms, check what bank access you grant, and keep only the subscriptions you use.
