Payday loans in one sentence
A payday loan lets you borrow against money you've earned but haven't been paid yet, and you repay it in one payment when your paycheck lands. It's built for speed: a short application, a quick decision and money in your account fast. For the basic definition, see what is a payday loan; this page walks through the process from application to final payment.
Step 1: Apply
You can apply at a storefront or online. Through Zebra Finance, one secure form takes about 3 minutes and is shared with lenders in our network that serve your state. Lenders typically ask for:
- A government-issued photo ID and proof you are at least 18 (19 in some states)
- Proof of regular income, such as pay stubs, benefit statements or direct deposits
- An open checking account in your name
- A working phone number, email and address
Many payday lenders focus on income and bank activity and may use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull from the big three bureaus. All credit types are considered. The full checklist is on payday loan requirements. See if you qualify — it takes about 3 minutes.
Step 2: Review and sign
If a lender approves you, it shows the loan amount, the fee, the due date and the total to repay. Federal Truth in Lending rules require the lender to disclose the finance charge and the APR in writing before you sign, so you see the exact terms up front. You're never obligated to accept.
You then give the lender a way to collect on the due date: usually an electronic debit authorization (ACH) for online loans, or a post-dated check at a store. This is a big part of why payday loans can be approved quickly: repayment is set up from the start.
Step 3: Get your money
In a store you usually leave with cash or a check. Online, the lender deposits the money into your bank account, most often by ACH. Funds often arrive the next business day after approval. ACH transfers settle on banking business days, so an application approved on a Friday evening may arrive Monday. Some lenders offer faster delivery to a debit card, sometimes for an extra fee. See payday loans on the weekend for timing tips.
Step 4: Repay on payday
On your next payday, typically two to four weeks later, the lender collects the loan plus the fee. Here's a typical example:
| Day | What happens | Balance |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | You borrow $400; fee is $15 per $100 | $460 owed |
| Day 14 | Lender collects from your account | $0, loan complete |
Fees are set by state law and the lender, so they vary. Use the calculator below to see the fee and total to repay under your state's cap. Your lender shows the exact APR and terms before you sign.

Estimate only. Your lender shows your exact cost before you sign.
If payday doesn't line up
Sometimes a bill or a shorter paycheck makes the due date tight. Plan for it early:
- Talk to your lender before the due date. Ask what options it offers.
- Extended payment plans. Some states require lenders to offer a no-cost extended payment plan if you ask before the due date.
- Renewals. In some states you can pay the fee and extend the loan another pay period for a new fee; other states limit or prohibit this.
- Keep enough in your account on the due date. A debit that doesn't clear can trigger a returned-payment fee from the lender and a fee from your bank.
Rules differ by state; see payday loan laws by state. If one paycheck won't cover the full amount, an installment loan (below) may suit you better.
Tips to get approved and funded faster
- Apply early on a business day. Approvals before a lender's cut-off time are more likely to fund the next business day.
- Use the account your pay goes into. Lenders look at regular deposits to confirm income.
- Enter details exactly. Your name, address, income and bank numbers should match your ID and bank records.
- Request what you need. A smaller amount that fits your next paycheck is easier to approve and repay.
- Watch your phone and email. Lenders sometimes verify information before funding, and a quick reply keeps things moving.
Storefront vs. online payday loans
| Storefront | Online | |
|---|---|---|
| How you apply | In person, during business hours | From your phone or computer, any time |
| How you repay | Often a post-dated check | Usually an automatic (ACH) debit |
| Speed | Cash in hand, often within an hour | Deposit often by the next business day |
| Shopping around | One store at a time | One form can reach many lenders |
Both must follow the law of the state where you live. Read the loan agreement for the name of the lender and the terms. If an agreement says a foreign or tribal law applies, see our tribal loans guide.
Payday loan vs. installment loan: which fits?
A classic payday loan is repaid in one payment. An installment loan spreads the balance over several scheduled payments, each covering part of the principal plus interest. Several states now allow or require small loans to be structured as installments. Paying $460 at once suits some budgets; four smaller payments suits others. A longer loan can cost more in total dollars, so compare the total to repay. Our form covers payday, personal and installment loans from $100 to $5,000, depending on your state.
Unexpected bills happen. Here's how to get it handled: complete our free form, review any offer you receive, and decide with no obligation. Zebra Finance matches you with lenders but isn't a lender and doesn't set terms; approval isn't guaranteed. Decisions are often made in minutes. See if you qualify — it takes about 3 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a payday loan?
Our online form takes about 3 minutes, and decisions are often made in minutes. In a store you may get cash the same day. Online, money usually arrives by ACH on the next business day; weekend and holiday applications usually fund on the following business day. Some lenders offer faster debit-card delivery.
How long does it take for a payday loan to be deposited?
Most online payday loans are deposited by ACH, typically by the next business day after approval. Approval late in the day, on a weekend or on a federal holiday moves the deposit to the next banking day, and your bank's posting schedule can add a few hours. Ask the lender for its cut-off time if timing matters.
Do payday loans take money out of your account automatically?
Usually yes. When you sign, you authorize the lender to debit your account on the due date, or you give a post-dated check. Make sure the full amount is in your account that day. If you have questions about the debit date, or want to change how you pay, contact the lender before the due date.
Can I pay off a payday loan early?
Usually yes. Ask how the fee is calculated before you sign: many payday loans charge a flat fee no matter when you repay, so paying early may not reduce the cost. Installment-style loans that charge interest over time are more likely to cost less when you pay ahead of schedule.
Do I need good credit for a payday loan?
No. Lenders in our network consider all credit types. Many focus on your income and checking account and may use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull from the major bureaus. Final terms and approval come from the lender.
Can you have two payday loans at once?
It depends on your state. Some states allow one payday loan at a time and check a statewide database; others allow several loans up to a total cap. If you need more than one loan covers, a single personal or installment loan may fit better. See our guide to how many payday loans you can have.
