What Is a Cash Advance? The Definition, Explained Four Ways

Updated 2026-10-25 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

A cash advance is short-term money you get now against funds you'll have later. The term covers four different products: a credit card cash advance, a payday cash advance loan, a cash advance app that fronts part of your paycheck, and a merchant cash advance for businesses. Each has its own costs, limits and repayment rules.

Cash advance definition

In plain terms, a cash advance is money you receive before you'd normally have it, which you pay back from money coming in later: your next paycheck, your credit card payment or your business's future sales. To "advance cash" simply means to provide funds ahead of time.

What makes the term confusing is that it describes several very different products. When someone asks "what is a cash advance," they usually mean one of the four below. Knowing which one you're looking at tells you how much you can get, what it costs and when it's due.

1. Credit card cash advance

A credit card cash advance lets you withdraw cash against your card's credit line at an ATM or bank, or with a convenience check. It isn't a purchase, so it's priced differently. According to the CFPB, issuers may charge a flat fee or a percentage of the amount, ATM fees may apply, the interest rate is commonly higher than for purchases, and interest starts as soon as you withdraw the money because cash advances don't get a grace period.

Example: if your card's cash advance fee is 5%, a $500 advance costs $25 up front, and interest at your card's cash advance rate starts that day. Your card's cash advance limit is often lower than its overall limit. Check your cardholder agreement for exact terms, and remember that the advance adds to your card balance, which can raise your credit utilization.

2. Payday cash advance loan

A payday loan is often marketed as a "cash advance" or "cash advance loan." The CFPB describes payday loans as generally $500 or less, typically due on your next payday, two to four weeks after you borrow. Lenders charge a fee per $100 borrowed; many state laws set a maximum of $10 to $30 per $100.

Example: at $15 per $100, a $400 two-week advance costs $60, so you repay $460 on payday. You need ID, a checking account and proof of income. Many lenders focus on your income rather than a traditional credit report. Rules vary by state; see payday loan laws by state.

Where payday loans aren't allowed, lenders in our network may offer installment loans with payments spread over several months.

3. Cash advance apps

Cash advance apps link to your bank account, look at your deposit history and front you part of your upcoming pay. On payday the app automatically takes the advance back. Instead of interest, apps typically earn money from instant-transfer fees, monthly memberships or optional tips. EarnIn, for example, advertises up to $200 a day and $1,000 per pay period, with standard transfers free and faster delivery for a fee (official site, checked October 25, 2026). First advances are usually much smaller than the advertised maximum.

4. Merchant cash advance

A merchant cash advance is for businesses, not consumers. A funder gives a business a lump sum in exchange for a share of its future card sales or receivables, collected daily or weekly until the agreed amount is repaid. The cost is usually expressed as a "factor rate" rather than an interest rate. If you're a sole proprietor looking for personal cash, a consumer loan is usually the simpler path; see loans for self-employed people.

Cash advance vs. loan: what's the difference?

Sometimes there isn't one. A payday cash advance is a loan, with a disclosed finance charge and due date. A credit card cash advance is borrowing on your existing credit line. App advances and employer wage access are structured around wages you've already earned and are treated differently. Under a December 2025 CFPB advisory opinion, certain employer-integrated earned wage access products that meet specific conditions are not "credit" under the Truth in Lending Act.

Which cash advance fits you?

  • You have a credit card with available cash credit and can pay it off fast: a card advance is quick, but interest starts immediately.
  • You need under $100 before payday and get regular direct deposits: an app may cover it.
  • You need $100 to $5,000, or an app won't give you enough: a cash advance loan or installment loan through our network is built for that.
  • You run a business with steady card sales: merchant advances are one option among business financing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cash advance in simple terms?

A cash advance is money you get now and repay from money you'll receive later, such as your next paycheck or your credit card payment. The term covers credit card cash advances, payday cash advance loans, cash advance apps and merchant cash advances for businesses. Each one has different costs and rules.

How does a cash advance work?

It depends on the type. A credit card advance adds cash to your card balance with a fee and immediate interest. A payday advance is a small loan with a fee per $100, due on your next payday. An app advance is repaid automatically from your next deposit. Always check the total cost first.

Is a cash advance a loan?

A payday cash advance and a credit card cash advance are both forms of borrowing. App-based and employer earned wage access products are structured differently, and the CFPB said in December 2025 that certain employer-integrated wage access products aren't credit under the Truth in Lending Act.

Does a cash advance hurt your credit?

A credit card advance raises your card balance, which can affect your utilization. Many payday lenders and cash advance apps don't pull a traditional hard credit report from the big three bureaus, though some may check alternative credit data. Ask the lender how it reviews and reports accounts.

How much can you get with a cash advance?

Card advances are limited by your cash advance limit. Payday advances are generally $500 or less, depending on your state. App advances often start under $100. Through our network, requests range from $100 to $5,000 depending on your state, income and lender.

What is the cash advance definition on a credit card?

On a credit card, a cash advance means using your card to get cash rather than make a purchase, such as an ATM withdrawal. It usually carries a fee, a higher interest rate than purchases, and no grace period, so interest starts right away.
