$255 Payday Loans: How They Work and How to Get One

Updated 2026-10-26 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

A $255 payday loan is the largest payday loan available in California. State law caps the check at $300 and the fee at 15% of the check, or $45, so you receive $255 and repay $300 on your due date, within 31 days. You can request one online with your ID, income details and checking account.

Why payday loans come in $255

If you've seen ads for "$255 payday loans," there's a simple reason for the odd number. Under California's Deferred Deposit Transaction Law, the check you write to a payday lender can't be more than $300, and the lender's fee can't be more than 15% of that check. Fifteen percent of $300 is $45. Take $45 off $300, and the most cash you can walk away with is $255.

So a $255 loan isn't a special product. It's the standard maximum payday loan in California, and many online lenders advertise it that way. See the full rules on our California payday loans page.

What a $255 loan costs you

At the maximum fee, you pay $45 to borrow $255 and repay $300 in one payment on your next payday, no more than 31 days later. Lenders can charge less than the cap, so it's worth checking your offer. Smaller loans work the same way: on a $200 check, the most the fee can be is $30, so you'd receive $170.

Your lender must show the fee, due date and APR in writing before you sign. California also limits extra charges: if a payment is returned, the lender can charge one fee of up to $15 and no other collection costs.

Worked example: fitting $300 into your next paycheck

Suppose you take $255 on the 1st and your next paycheck of $1,100 lands on the 15th. On the due date, $300 comes out, leaving $800 for everything else until the following payday. Before you sign, list the bills due in that window, such as rent, utilities and your phone, and make sure the $800 covers them. If it doesn't, a smaller check or an installment loan may fit better. And if a lender charges less than the cap, you keep the difference: a $40 fee on a $300 check, for example, would put $260 in your account.

California rules that protect $255 borrowers

  • No rollovers. A lender can't charge a fee to extend your loan.
  • One at a time. A lender can't give you a new payday loan while you still have one outstanding with it.
  • Payment plans without extra fees. A lender may extend your due date or offer a payment plan (it isn't required to), but it can't charge more for doing so.
  • Licensed lenders only. Payday lenders in California must be licensed by the state's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.

These protections apply to licensed California payday lenders. Read your agreement for the lender's name and terms.

What lenders look at for a $255 loan

  • Regular income from a job or benefits, deposited into your checking account, that can cover $300 on the due date.
  • California residency for a California loan, confirmed by your ID and address.
  • No open payday loan with that lender, since California allows only one at a time per lender.
  • An active checking account in your name, in good standing.
  • Matching details: the name, address and bank account on your form should match your ID and bank records.

Credit history may be reviewed, but many lenders in our network focus on income and bank activity and may use alternative credit data rather than a traditional hard pull. All credit types can apply. See if you qualify in about 3 minutes.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a due date before your pay arrives. Pick the date your deposit actually clears.
  • Expecting $255 in another state. The amount comes from California's rules; elsewhere the maximum and fees differ.
  • Entering gross pay. Lenders compare your take-home pay with your deposits.
  • Ignoring a cheaper offer. Fees can be below the cap, so read the disclosure.

Do other states have $255 payday loans?

The $255 figure is tied to California's $300 check limit. Other states use different limits, so their maximums look different:

  • Tennessee and Kentucky set fees on the check's face amount too (15% in Tennessee, $15 per $100 in Kentucky), so a $300 check would also put $255 in your hand, but both allow larger checks than California. See Tennessee and Kentucky.
  • Many states cap payday loans at $500 or more, so you can borrow more than $255 where law allows.
  • Some states don't allow payday loans at all; there, an installment loan is the usual alternative.

Check your state's maximum on maximum payday loan amounts or payday loan laws by state.

Need more than $255?

If $255 won't cover the bill, you have options. In California and many other states, licensed lenders offer installment loans for larger amounts, repaid over several months instead of in one payment. Through our network, requests run from about $100 to $5,000 depending on your state and income.

Example: a $1,000 installment loan over 12 months at an assumed 36% APR is about $100.46 a month (about $1,205.55 in total). Your lender shows the exact terms before you sign. See $500 loans, $1,000 loans and installment loans.

Bad credit? You can still apply. Many lenders in our network focus on income and bank activity, and some use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull. Start your free request.

Frequently asked questions

Why are payday loans $255?

California caps the payday loan check at $300 and the fee at 15% of the check. The maximum fee is $45, so the most cash a borrower can receive is $255. Lenders advertise $255 because it's the largest payday loan allowed in California.

How much do I pay back on a $255 payday loan?

At the maximum California fee, you repay $300: the $255 you received plus a $45 fee. The loan is due in one payment within 31 days, usually on your next payday. Lenders may charge less than the maximum, and your agreement shows the exact amount.

Can I get a $255 payday loan online the same day?

Some lenders fund the same day if you're approved early on a business day, but next-business-day funding is more common. Having your ID, income details and bank information ready, and answering verification calls quickly, gives you the best chance of fast funding.

Can I get a $255 loan with bad credit?

You can apply. Many lenders in our network focus on your income and checking account history rather than only your credit score, and some use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull. The lender makes the final decision.

Can I have two $255 payday loans at once in California?

A California lender can't make you a new payday loan while you have one outstanding with it, and it can't charge a fee to extend a loan. If you need more than $255, ask about an installment loan, which can cover larger amounts repaid over several months.

What do I need to get a $255 payday loan?

Usually you need to be 18 or older, have a valid ID and Social Security number, show regular income such as pay stubs or benefit deposits, and have an active checking account in your name. For a California loan, you also need a California address. Have your bank's routing and account numbers ready to finish our form in about 3 minutes.

Can I get a $255 payday loan on SSI or Social Security?

Often, yes. Many lenders accept Social Security, SSI and disability benefits as income if they're deposited into your checking account on a regular schedule. The lender still checks that your next deposit can cover the $300 repayment. Approval and terms are up to the lender, and you'll see them before you sign.
