We're sorry for your loss
Losing someone is hard enough without worrying about how to pay for the service. Funeral homes often ask for payment before or soon after the service, and life insurance or estate money can take weeks to arrive. A funeral loan bridges that gap so you can focus on your family.
Zebra Finance is a free loan-matching service, not a lender. One short form reaches lenders in our network that serve your state, and you can decline any offer.

What a funeral loan can cover
- Funeral home services and staff
- Burial or cremation
- A casket, urn or alternative container
- Cemetery plot, opening and closing, and a headstone or marker
- Flowers, obituary notices and printed programs
- Travel for family members and a reception
A personal loan gives you the money directly, so you can pay the funeral home, cemetery and other costs from one source.
Get prices first, then borrow the right amount
Federal rules help you see costs before you commit. Under the FTC's Funeral Rule:
- A funeral home must give you price information over the phone if you ask.
- When you visit, it must give you a written, itemized General Price List to keep.
- You can choose individual items instead of a package.
- You can buy a casket or urn elsewhere, and the funeral home can't refuse it or charge a handling fee.
Add up the items you choose, then request that amount. Borrowing just what you need keeps your monthly payment lower.
Sample monthly payments
| Amount | Term | Sample APR | Monthly payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | 12 months | 30% | About $146.23 |
| $3,000 | 24 months | 24% | About $158.61 |
| $5,000 | 60 months | 18% | About $126.97 |
These are illustrations, not quotes. Your rate depends on your credit, income, state and lender. Your lender shows the exact APR and terms before you sign. Try the personal loan calculator.
Worked example: from price list to loan amount
Here's how one family might size a loan. The figures are hypothetical, so use your own price list:
- Total the itemized choices. Say the services, cremation, urn and a small reception add up to $4,200.
- Subtract what's on hand. Family members put in $1,500 from savings.
- Request the gap: $2,700.
- Choose a term. At an assumed 24% APR, $2,700 is about $255.31 a month over 12 months (about $3,064 total) or about $142.75 a month over 24 months (about $3,426 total).
If a life insurance payout is expected later, the shorter term or an early payoff keeps the total lower. Ask your lender whether early payoff carries any fee, and check the exact APR and total in your offer before signing.
Other money that may help
A loan can work alongside other sources, especially when those take time to pay out:
- Life insurance: claims can take time to process after you send a death certificate.
- Veterans: the VA offers a burial allowance that can help survivors with part of the burial, funeral and plot costs for eligible veterans.
- Social Security: a small one-time death payment may be available to an eligible surviving spouse or child.
- The estate: funeral costs can often be repaid from the estate once it's settled.
If you expect money later, ask the lender whether you can pay off the loan early without a penalty.
What lenders look at
- Your own income, since the loan is in your name. Wages, Social Security, pension, disability and self-employment income can all count.
- Your checking account history and regular deposits.
- Your monthly obligations, such as rent and other loan payments, to see what payment fits.
- Credit history, as one factor. All credit types are considered through our form.
- Your state, which sets loan size and pricing limits; see personal loan rates by state.
What to have ready
Your photo ID, Social Security number, income details, checking account and routing numbers, and the funeral home's itemized total. With those in hand, the form takes about 3 minutes.
Requirements
- Age 18 or older (19 in a few states) and a U.S. resident
- A government photo ID
- Regular income from work, benefits or self-employment
- An active checking account
- A phone number and email
The loan is in your name and based on your income, not the estate. Social Security, pension and disability income can count. See personal loan requirements.
Common mistakes when paying for a funeral
- Agreeing to a package before seeing the General Price List. You have the right to pick individual items.
- Borrowing before the total is settled. Get the itemized figure first so you request the right amount.
- Not asking about deposits and due dates. Knowing when payment is due tells you how quickly you need funds.
- Forgetting travel and reception costs, which often come on top of the funeral home's bill.
- Letting one person carry the whole cost silently. If relatives plan to chip in, agree on amounts before you choose the loan size.
Bad credit and funeral loans
You can apply with any credit. Many lenders in our network focus on your income and bank history and may use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull. A lower score may affect your rate or the amount offered. See loans for bad credit and emergency loans.
To give your request the best chance, use the checking account where your income is deposited, list every regular source of income, and ask for the amount on the funeral home's itemized total rather than a round number well above it. If the cost is larger than one loan will cover, a family member with steadier income or stronger credit may want to submit their own request for part of it.
How to apply
- Get the funeral home's price list and total your choices.
- Fill out our form with that amount. About 3 minutes.
- Review your offer: amount, APR, monthly payment and total.
- E-sign, and funds are often deposited the next business day.

Frequently asked questions
Can you get a loan to pay for a funeral?
Yes. A personal installment loan can pay for burial, cremation, a service and related costs. Through our network you can request $100 to $5,000, and if a lender approves you, funds are often deposited the next business day.
How fast can I get a funeral loan?
Our form takes about 3 minutes, and many lenders decide within minutes. If you're approved and e-sign, funds are often in your account the next business day. Apply early on a business day for the quickest timing.
Can I get a funeral loan with bad credit?
Yes, you can apply. Many lenders consider all credit types and focus on income and bank history, often using alternative credit data. Bad credit may affect the rate or amount, and approval is up to the lender.
Do funeral homes offer payment plans?
Some do, and terms vary by funeral home. Ask when you get the General Price List. A personal loan is another way to pay the full amount up front and repay over time in fixed monthly payments.
Does the VA help pay for funerals?
For eligible veterans, the VA offers a burial allowance that can cover part of burial, funeral and plot costs, plus transportation in some cases. Survivors or others who paid the costs can apply. Eligibility rules apply, so check with the VA.
Who is responsible for paying for a funeral?
Usually whoever signs the contract with the funeral home. Costs can often be repaid from the estate. A funeral loan is in your name and based on your income, so you're responsible for repaying it.
Can I get a funeral loan on Social Security income?
Yes, you can apply. Many lenders count Social Security, SSI, disability and pension income if it arrives regularly in your checking account. The lender will look at whether the monthly payment fits that income. Approval and the amount offered are up to each lender.
How much is a funeral loan per month?
It depends on the amount, rate and term. As illustrations, $1,500 over 12 months at an assumed 30% APR is about $146.23 a month, and $3,000 over 24 months at 24% is about $158.61 a month. Your lender shows the exact payment, APR and total before you sign.
