No direct deposit? You can still qualify
Paid by paper check, in cash, on a payroll card or through a gig app? You can still get a payday loan. Direct deposit simply makes it easy for a lender to see how much you earn and when it arrives. If you can show that in another way, many lenders will review your request.
Our form asks how you're paid, and we share your request with lenders in our network that serve your state. See if you qualify — it takes about 3 minutes.
Why lenders like direct deposit
Direct deposit tells a lender three things at once: you have income, how much it is, and exactly when it arrives. That speeds up review. But it's a convenience, not a legal requirement for most loans. Lenders that work without it simply read pay stubs and bank statements to see the same pattern, which may take a little longer. Many people paid by paper check qualify this way every day.
Some lenders verify income by securely linking to your bank account, which shows your deposits whether they came from direct deposit, a mobile check deposit or cash at a branch. Others ask you to upload statements. Either way, what matters is a consistent pattern of income.
What to show instead
| How you're paid | Best proof |
|---|---|
| Paper paycheck you deposit | Two recent pay stubs plus bank statements showing the deposits |
| Cash wages or tips | Regular cash deposits to your account and a prior tax return |
| Gig app payouts | Platform earnings summary and the matching transfers |
| Payroll card | Pay stubs and card statements, plus transfers to your checking account |
| Benefits by paper check or card | Award letter and statements |
The more regular the pattern, the better. Lenders reading statements want to see income on similar dates each pay period. If you were recently hired, an offer letter showing your pay rate and start date can support your first paychecks, though many lenders still want at least one stub.
Step by step: qualifying with paper checks or cash pay
- Deposit every paycheck into one checking account. A steady deposit pattern is the next best thing to direct deposit.
- Keep your pay stubs. Lenders match the stub to the deposit.
- Let two or three pay cycles post if you just started a job.
- Request an amount one paycheck can cover. A realistic request is easier to approve.
- Apply through our form and upload statements if a lender asks.
Paid in cash? Deposit it on the same day each pay period, in amounts close to your actual pay. A lender reading your statements will see a pattern that looks just like a paycheck. Keep a simple log or employer letter that confirms your rate and schedule in case a lender asks.
What it costs
Not having direct deposit doesn't change how payday loans are priced. Lenders charge a flat fee per $100 within your state's limit, commonly $10 to $30. At a sample $15 per $100:
- $200 loan: $30 fee, repay $230
- $300 loan: $45 fee, repay $345
- $500 loan: $75 fee, repay $575
Your lender shows the exact APR and terms before you sign. Try the payday loan calculator.
Direct deposit vs. autopay: know the difference
- Direct deposit is how your income reaches your account.
- Autopay (a preauthorized debit) is how a lender collects repayment.
Federal Regulation E says a lender can't make repayment by preauthorized electronic transfer a condition of giving you credit, with limited exceptions. You can also stop an automatic debit by notifying your bank at least three business days before it's scheduled. Stopping a payment doesn't cancel what you owe, so agree on another way to pay with your lender, such as a debit card payment you make yourself.
Federal benefits: one extra advantage of direct deposit
If you receive Social Security, SSI, VA, Railroad Retirement or federal civil-service benefits, direct deposit adds protection. Under 31 CFR Part 212, when a bank receives a garnishment order, it must protect up to two months of those directly deposited benefits. If you're setting up direct deposit anyway, it's worth doing for your benefits. See loans for Social Security recipients.
Setting up direct deposit, if you can
If your employer offers direct deposit, signing up usually takes one form with your account and routing numbers and starts within a pay cycle or two. Once it's running, more lenders can review you instantly, and your income is easier to verify for larger installment loans too. If your employer doesn't offer it, depositing each paycheck by mobile check deposit on payday creates a similar pattern. Using a Chime or other online account? See payday loans with Chime.

Frequently asked questions
Can you get a payday loan without direct deposit?
Yes, often. Many lenders accept other proof of regular income, such as pay stubs and bank statements showing deposited paychecks, benefits letters or gig earnings summaries. You still need an active checking account for the loan deposit and repayment. Approval is up to the lender and your state's rules.
Can a lender make me sign up for automatic payments?
Under federal Regulation E, a lender generally can't require repayment by preauthorized electronic transfer as a condition of giving you credit. Many lenders offer autopay as an option because it's convenient. You can also stop a scheduled debit by notifying your bank at least three business days ahead.
What counts as proof of income without direct deposit?
Recent pay stubs, bank statements showing regular deposits, a benefits award letter, a gig platform earnings summary, or a prior tax return can all work. Lenders want to see that income arrives regularly and in a consistent amount, so statements covering two or three pay periods help.
Do I need a bank account if I don't have direct deposit?
Yes, for online loans. Lenders deposit funds and collect repayment through a checking account, and some accept a prepaid account in your name. Direct deposit into that account isn't required, but regular deposits of your pay help show your income.
How fast can I get a loan without direct deposit?
Our form takes about 3 minutes and many lenders decide within minutes. Without direct deposit, a lender may need to review statements or pay stubs, which can add a little time. Have them ready to upload, and approved funds are often deposited the next business day.
