Is a Payday Loan Installment or Revolving Credit?

Updated 2026-10-25 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

A traditional payday loan is neither installment nor revolving credit. It is a single-payment, closed-end loan: you borrow once and repay the balance plus a fee on your next payday. Installment loans are repaid in scheduled payments, and revolving credit, like a credit card, lets you borrow repeatedly up to a limit.

Three ways credit can be structured

Lenders and credit bureaus sort consumer credit by how it's repaid. Installment accounts are lump-sum loans repaid on a set schedule. Revolving accounts are open-ended credit you can pay down and borrow against again while you stay under your limit. A third group, single-payment loans, is repaid all at once.

TypeHow it worksExamples
InstallmentBorrow a fixed amount once; repay in scheduled payments until the balance is zero.Personal loans, auto loans, mortgages, student loans
RevolvingGet a credit limit; borrow, repay and borrow again. Minimum payments change with the balance.Credit cards, personal lines of credit, HELOCs
Single-payment (closed-end)Borrow once; repay everything in one payment on a set date.Traditional payday loans, many 30-day title loans, pawn loans

A traditional payday loan fits the third row. Knowing which row you need makes it easier to pick the right loan when you apply.

Why a payday loan isn't installment credit

An installment loan has two defining features: a series of scheduled payments, and each payment reduces the principal. A traditional payday loan works differently. It's typically repaid in a single payment on your next payday, usually two to four weeks after you borrow.

Some states allow a lender to extend the due date if you pay the fee, which is called a rollover or renewal. That can look like a series of payments, but the principal stays the same until you repay it. In an installment loan, every on-time payment brings you closer to zero.

If you'd rather have that built-in payoff schedule, an installment loan through our network spreads the balance over several payments.

Why it isn't revolving credit either

Revolving credit gives you a limit you can draw on repeatedly without reapplying. A payday loan is a one-time advance. When it's repaid, the transaction is complete. Borrowing again means a new loan with its own agreement, even with the same lender.

People sometimes describe repeat payday borrowing as "revolving," but legally and on paper each loan is separate, with its own fee, due date and disclosure.

Exceptions that blur the lines

  • Payday installment loans: some lenders offer short-term loans repaid in several installments instead of one lump sum. These are installment credit.
  • Online lines of credit: some lenders offer open-ended lines with a limit you can redraw. Those are revolving credit.
  • Bank and app advances: these are usually repaid in one deduction from your next deposit, much like a payday loan, though apps often charge fees, tips or subscriptions instead of a finance charge.

To know which you have, read the loan agreement. A closed-end loan lists a payment schedule and a total of payments. An open-end line lists a credit limit and how minimum payments are calculated.

What this means for your credit report

Credit scoring models look at your mix of installment and revolving accounts and, for revolving accounts, how much of your limit you're using. Most payday lenders don't report on-time payments to the three major credit bureaus, so a payday loan usually doesn't show up as either type.

If a payday loan goes unpaid and is sent to a collection agency, the collection account can appear on your reports. Some short-term lenders also use specialty consumer reporting companies.

If building credit history is part of your goal, an installment loan from a lender that reports to the bureaus is the structure designed for it. Ask the lender which bureaus it reports to. See can payday loans go on your credit and do payday loans build credit.

How the cost works in each structure

Structure doesn't set the price, but it shapes how the cost adds up.

  • Single-payment: the cost is a flat fee, often quoted per $100 borrowed. Borrow $300 at a $15-per-$100 fee and you repay $345 on the due date. State law sets the maximum fee.
  • Installment: interest accrues on the declining balance. Paying early usually saves interest if there's no prepayment penalty.
  • Revolving: interest accrues on whatever balance you carry. Paying more than the minimum shortens payoff.

Whichever you choose, your lender shows the exact APR, finance charge and total of payments before you sign. Try the payday loan calculator or personal loan calculator to see your numbers.

Choosing the right structure for your situation

Match the structure to the need:

  • A one-time expense you'd like to repay over a few months: installment loan. The payoff date is built in. See what is an installment loan.
  • A small gap you can repay in full from your next check: a payday loan is quick and simple, where your state allows it.
  • Ongoing small expenses you'll repay quickly: revolving credit can be flexible if you keep balances low.
  • Several short-term loans you'd like to combine: a personal installment loan can roll them into one payment. See consolidating payday loans.

Quick test: which type is my loan?

  • One due date for the whole balance? Single-payment.
  • A payment schedule that ends at zero? Installment.
  • A credit limit you can draw on again? Revolving.

Your Truth in Lending disclosure answers this. Closed-end loans show an amount financed, finance charge, APR and total of payments. Open-end credit shows a credit limit, periodic rates and how minimum payments work.

Frequently asked questions

Is a payday loan considered revolving credit?

No. Revolving credit, like a credit card, gives you a reusable credit limit. A payday loan is a one-time advance repaid in a single payment, and borrowing again means a new loan with its own agreement. Some lenders offer open-ended lines of credit, which are revolving, but a traditional payday loan is not.

Is a payday loan an installment loan?

A traditional payday loan is not. It's due in one lump sum, usually on your next payday. Installment loans are repaid through scheduled payments that each reduce the balance. Some lenders offer payday installment loans repaid in several payments; those count as installment credit. You can request either type through our form.

Is a personal loan installment or revolving?

A personal loan is installment credit. You receive a lump sum and repay it in fixed payments over a set term, often several months to a few years. A personal line of credit is the revolving version: you get a limit and can borrow, repay and borrow again during the draw period.

Do payday loans show up on credit reports as installment accounts?

Usually they don't show up at all. Most payday lenders don't report on-time payments to the three major credit bureaus. If a payday loan goes unpaid and is sent to collections, the collection account may appear on your reports. If you want payments reported, ask an installment lender which bureaus it uses.

Is a cash advance revolving credit?

A credit card cash advance is part of your revolving card line, so it counts toward your card balance. An app cash advance isn't revolving credit; it's a short advance repaid from your next deposit. A payday loan marketed as a "cash advance" is a single-payment loan.
