How to Refinance a Personal Loan: Steps and the Math That Matters

Updated 2026-10-25 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

To refinance a personal loan, you take out a new loan, ideally with a lower APR or a better payment, and use it to pay off the old one. It saves money only if the new loan's total cost, including any origination fee, is lower than what you'd still owe on the current loan. Check your payoff amount, compare offers, then switch.

When refinancing a loan makes sense

  • Your credit has improved since you took the loan, so you may qualify for a lower APR.
  • Your payment is too high and a longer term would make it manageable, even if the total cost rises.
  • You want to remove a cosigner by refinancing into your own name.
  • You have a short, single-payment loan (payday or title) and want fixed monthly installments instead.
  • You're juggling several loans and want one payment.

The origination-fee math

A lower rate isn't automatically a win. Many new loans charge an origination fee, often deducted from the proceeds or added to the balance. Here are two examples using assumed rates (not quotes):

Example 1: refinancing saves money. You owe $3,000 at 36% APR with 18 months left: about $218.13 a month, about $3,926.27 still to pay. A new 18-month loan at 24% with a $150 fee rolled in ($3,150 balance) is about $210.11 a month, about $3,782.01 in total. Savings: about $144.

Example 2: refinancing costs more. You owe $2,000 at 30% with 12 months left: about $194.97 a month, about $2,339.69. A new 12-month loan at 27% with a 6% fee rolled in ($2,120) is about $203.56 a month, about $2,442.68. That's about $103 more, despite the lower rate.

The rule: compare total remaining cost on the old loan with the total of payments on the new one, for the same time frame. Use the personal loan calculator.

How to refinance a personal loan in 5 steps

  1. Get your payoff amount from your current lender, including any interest through the payoff date, and ask about prepayment penalties.
  2. Check your credit and budget. Know your score range and the monthly payment you can handle.
  3. Compare offers by APR, fees, term and total of payments.
  4. Accept the new loan and use the funds to pay off the old one right away. Some lenders pay the old lender directly.
  5. Confirm the old account shows $0 and stop any automatic payments to it.

Refinancing payday or title debt into an installment loan

If you have a payday or title loan due in one lump sum, an installment loan can replace that single payment with fixed monthly payments. You'd use the new loan to pay the balance in full, then repay the installment loan over months. This can make the payment fit your budget and give you a clear payoff date.

  • Get the exact payoff amount on your payday or title loan.
  • Compare the installment loan's total of payments with what you'd pay by renewing or extending, if your state allows that.
  • Paying a title loan in full gets your lien released; confirm the title is cleared.

More: consolidate payday loans, refinance a title loan and getting out of payday loan debt.

Refinance loan with bad credit

You don't need perfect credit to refinance. Many lenders in our network consider fair and bad credit and focus on income and bank history; some use alternative credit data instead of a traditional hard pull. The key is the math above: the new loan should lower your total cost or meaningfully improve your payment. If your score has risen since you borrowed, you may be offered better terms. Mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the fee. A rate cut can be wiped out by an origination fee.
  • Stretching the term without noticing. A lower payment over more months can raise the total.
  • Leaving the old loan open or with an automatic payment still scheduled.
  • Borrowing more than the payoff unless you need it and the payment still fits.
  • Missing a payment during the switch. Keep paying the old loan until it's confirmed paid off.

Frequently asked questions

Can you refinance a personal loan?

Yes. You take a new loan and use it to pay off the current one. It's worth it when the new loan's total cost, including fees, is lower than what you still owe, or when a lower payment is what you need most.

Does refinancing a personal loan hurt your credit?

Applying can trigger a hard inquiry, which may lower your score slightly for a short time, and the new account changes your account age. Paying the old loan off and making on-time payments on the new one can help over time.

When should I refinance a loan?

Consider it when your credit has improved, rates you qualify for are lower, your payment is too high, or you want to convert a single-payment payday or title loan into fixed installments. Always compare total costs first.

Can I refinance a payday loan into an installment loan?

Often, yes. You use an installment loan to pay the payday balance in full, then repay over several months. Compare the installment loan's total of payments with your current payoff and any renewal costs.

Is there a fee to refinance a personal loan?

There may be. Some lenders charge an origination fee on the new loan, and some old loans have prepayment penalties. Include both in your math before you switch.

How soon can I refinance a personal loan?

There's usually no legal waiting period, but your current lender may charge a prepayment penalty and a new lender will review your recent payment history. Many people refinance after several months of on-time payments or once their credit has improved.
