Borrowing Money With PayPal or Venmo

Updated 2026-10-28 · By the Zebra Finance editorial team · How we research

PayPal offers Pay Later plans for purchases, but neither PayPal nor Venmo offers a cash loan you can borrow into your balance. Lenders in our network deposit loans to a checking account in your name, which you can then use alongside PayPal or Venmo. Our free form takes about 3 minutes, and approved funds are often deposited the next business day.

Can you borrow money from PayPal or Venmo?

Not as a cash loan for everyday bills. PayPal and Venmo are payment services, not banks. PayPal describes itself as a financial technology company, not a bank, and Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc. What PayPal does offer is a way to split up purchases you make at checkout, called Pay Later. That helps if you're buying something from a store that takes PayPal, but it doesn't put cash in your pocket for rent, a utility bill or a car repair.

If you need cash, the practical route is a loan deposited to your bank account. Lenders in our network offer $100 to $5,000, depending on your state, and many decide within minutes. See if you qualify — it takes about 3 minutes.

What PayPal Pay Later offers

According to PayPal's Pay Later page (checked October 28, 2026):

  • Pay in 4: for purchases from $10 to $2,000, split into four interest-free payments every two weeks, with the first due at purchase. PayPal says there are no late fees or sign-up fees. Not available to Missouri residents.
  • Pay Monthly: for purchases from $49 to $10,000, paid over 3, 6, 12 or 24 months. Pay Monthly is issued by WebBank, and the APR depends on the purchase amount and your credit. Not available in Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii or Washington.
  • Where it works: online and in stores that accept PayPal.

Both are tied to a specific purchase. You can't use them to move cash into your account.

Why lenders deposit to a bank account, not a PayPal or Venmo balance

A lender needs an account it can send money to and, with your permission, collect scheduled payments from. That's normally a checking account in your name. PayPal and Venmo both give eligible users direct deposit numbers so an employer can send pay to their balance, but they present those numbers as a way to receive direct deposits. Lenders in our network deposit to a checking account in your name, and that's the account to list on your request.

The good news: many lenders accept bank-app accounts, such as Chime, Varo or Current, as long as they have routing and account numbers and receive your income. Once your loan lands in your bank account, you can move money into PayPal or Venmo if that's how you pay.

If your paycheck goes to PayPal or Venmo

Lenders mainly look at your income deposits. If your pay currently lands in a PayPal or Venmo balance, here's how to set yourself up:

  • Use a checking account for your request. List the bank account where you want the loan and where repayment will come from.
  • Show your income another way. Pay stubs, a benefits letter or a downloaded PayPal or Venmo statement can help a lender see your deposits.
  • Consider routing part of your pay to your bank. Regular deposits in the account you list make your application stronger.
  • Gig workers: if you're paid by a platform, see loans for gig workers.

Watch for PayPal and Venmo loan scams

Because many people search for "loans on Venmo," scammers sometimes pose as lenders and ask you to send an upfront fee through Venmo, PayPal, a gift card or a prepaid card. A legitimate lender never asks for money before your loan is funded; any fees are part of the loan and shown in your disclosure before you sign. Loan options through our network

  • Payday loans for smaller amounts, repaid on your next payday where your state allows them. At a sample $15 per $100, a $300 loan costs a $45 fee, $345 to repay. See payday loans.
  • Personal and installment loans for larger amounts, repaid in fixed payments. A $1,000 loan over 12 months at a sample 36% APR is about $100.46 a month. See personal loans.

Your lender shows the exact APR and terms before you sign.

How to get a loan, then use it with PayPal or Venmo

  1. Fill out the form. Enter the amount, your contact details, income and bank information. It takes about 3 minutes.
  2. Get matched. We send your request to lenders in our network that serve your state.
  3. Review your offer. If a lender approves you, you see the amount, APR, payment schedule and total to repay before you sign.
  4. Get your money. Accept, e-sign, and funds are often deposited the next business day.

Zebra Finance is a free loan-matching service, not a lender. Whether you get an offer, and for how much, is up to the lender and your state's rules. You are never obligated to accept.

Frequently asked questions

Can I borrow money from PayPal?

PayPal doesn't offer a cash loan to your balance for everyday consumers. It offers Pay Later for purchases: Pay in 4 for $10 to $2,000 and Pay Monthly for $49 to $10,000, issued by WebBank. For cash, lenders in our network offer $100 to $5,000 deposited to your checking account.

Can I borrow money on Venmo?

Venmo doesn't offer a cash loan you can borrow into your Venmo balance. It's a payment service of PayPal, Inc. If you need cash, a loan through our network is deposited to a checking account in your name, and you can then move money to Venmo yourself. Our form takes about 3 minutes.

Can a payday loan be sent to my PayPal or Venmo account?

Lenders in our network deposit to a checking account in your name, not to a PayPal or Venmo balance. Many accept bank-app accounts like Chime, Varo or Current that have routing and account numbers and receive your income. Once the loan arrives, you can transfer funds to PayPal or Venmo.

What do I need to get a loan if I get paid through PayPal or Venmo?

You'll need a checking account in your name for the deposit and repayment, a government photo ID, and proof of income. Statements showing your PayPal or Venmo deposits, pay stubs or a benefits letter can help show income. Regular deposits in the bank account you list make your application stronger.

Does PayPal Pay Later check credit?

PayPal says Pay Monthly APR depends on the purchase amount and your credit, and missed payments may affect your credit score. Approval terms for Pay in 4 are shown at checkout. Each product is for a specific purchase from a merchant that accepts PayPal, not a cash loan.

Is someone offering a loan through Venmo a scam?

Be careful. A common scam asks you to pay an upfront fee through Venmo, PayPal, a gift card or a prepaid card before a loan is released. Legitimate lenders don't collect money before funding you; fees are part of the loan and disclosed before you sign.
